BR: Dwarfs vs Chaos Beasts part 3
So the Dwarfs had rallied and set up a battle line. The far right flank warriors curiously turned their flank to 2 units of Rat Ogres. Little did I know he had the Oath stone ready to throw down in the event of a flank charge that he felt he could not avoid.
So starting on turn 4, here was what I was looking at:
Turn 4a: Kill them. Kill them all!!
I charge into the far right warriors with both Rat Ogre units and a chariot from the front. He throws down the oath stone.
We are both thinking the 2 Rat Ogres will hit the flank, but when we laid down the charge arc template, the unit of 3 Rat Ogres were on the rear. This was huge as I was now able to get all 7!!! Rat Ogres on his warriors as well as the chariot to the front.
In movement I reveal my objective breakthrough. I have to get 3 units off the board. Instead of risking the spawn on tying up the long beards, I go ahead and run him off the board.
Both hound units make a beeline for the board edge and the furies fly on and stay in the corner. I figure unless he is willing to give up some huge flanks I should easily get off 3 units.
In combat The Rat Ogres were merciless killing no less than 12 Dwarfs in their 21 attacks. And the chariot piled on a couple more. Even with ranks, they lost by a ton and I now outnumbered them with Rat Ogres that caused the auto-break roll. Needing insane courage to stay...he failed.
The dwarfs fled and were cut down.
The thunderers fought tough as well and only lost combat by 1. Needing an 8 to stay, they failed. Then re-rolled from the BSB and failed again!! They fled and were run down.
Here was what my opponent faced at the beginning of his turn:
Turn 4b: We will fight to the death!!
He moved up his units to force a confrontation with me in hopes of pulling some victory points from me. This now forced me to charge or be charged.
Here was the set up for me starting turn 5:
Turn 5a: For the Glory of Rat Spawn, CHARGE!!!
So into the fray we went.
Ratspawn and beastherd charge into the Longbeards with BSB.
2 Rat Ogre units on far left flank charge into Ironbreakers with General.
The Longbeards was easy to resolve, but when we laid down the arc for the ironbreakers, the unit of 4 Rat Ogres were on their flank!! So I could get all 7 in, and this could lead to the slaughter of the Dwarfs!!
I then moved my beastherd out of the house, and the wargor seperated from the unit.
I then cast steed of shadows on him but it was dispelled. I then cast the movement spell on the herd and it was dispelled. That about sums up my magic all day long.
For the rest of movement, the hounds moved towards table edge and furies flew off, giving me my objective. I decided to leave the 1 unit of Rat Ogres, that had pursued off last turn, off to ensure I got the objective.
In combat Ratspawn spues out a challenge. The Longbeard champion takes up the call. 5 attacks later he has to make 3 armor saves and fails one. Then the Hellfire sword spues in another 6 wounds, giving me the max of 5 overkill to go with the 1 wound.
The 10 attacks from my rat ogres wrack up another 5-6 wounds. Then the beast herd kills one as well. He only manages a couple wounds back with his BSB and Longbeards on the flank and I win by a lot.
He fails both break checks and is run down. I capture both his unit standard and BSB!!!
Then the big one. 21 Rat Ogre attacks. 3 must go on his general. When the smoke had cleared, I had killed 5 Iron breakers.
He manages to only do 5 wounds back.
He has a standard, and I have a flank.
So it comes down to US. I have 15 since he killed off a Rat Ogre in both units. But he has the rune to double his US. Giving him the win by 1.
The unit of 4 (now 3), flee the unit of 3(now 2) stay.
The beastherd panic, run and run through the hero. Luckily, he passes his panic test.
Here was the battlefield starting his turn 5:
Turn 5b: We got em now laddys!!
The warriors charge into the flank of the 2 rat Ogres, kill 1 and the other fails his insane courage and flees.
Here is the situation at the top of turn 6:
Turn 6a: Don't give it away now!!
With 3 units fleeing, things could get really messy if I didn't make some rally rolls.
The beastherd with shaman who was going to flee right through Ratspawns unit and the other herd was the most important. And needing a 10 to rally, I roll a 10!!
Then both Rat Ogres make theirs on an 8.
So going into the final turn we have:
Turn 6b: Just get what you can.
The generals unit was out of charge range and so moves to contest the table quarter.
The warriors can charge the unit of 3, or the lone Rat ogre.
Problem is if he charges the 3, he will draw in the 1. If he charges the 1, he can only get 3 dwarfs in combat. And if he breaks, being only US 3, will not cause any panic checks.
He opts for the 1, but whiffs completely. I kill 2 back, so only lose by 3. I then make the break test.
Final result, was a massacre.
I had picked up: +100 points for table quarter, +300 from banners, +200 from the objective. + the cost of the BSB, hero, 3 warmachines, thunderers, warriors and longbeards.
He had: -100 for failure to get objective, 1/2 points for unit of 3 rat Ogres, 1 unit of chaos hounds, 1/2 points for one shaman. Wow!!
So he got a total of 82 vp when you add in the penalty.
In the end, the dwarfs just could not stand up to quickness, ferocity and power of the Doombull/Minotaur army, ecspecially when I got to go first and was on top of him before he knew it.
Also, the terrain placement in the end benefited me, even though he got to place the hill to his advantage.
My opponent was of course a great gentleman through the whole battle and even when his dice were bad and mine were super hot (the battle with the oathstone) he was a great sport as always.
Thanks for the game Andy.

Thanks Ben I enjoyed the game. This is a great battle report.
Andy
Very cool report, too bad the oathstone didn't work out better.
Yea, the oathstone didn't work out because he turned too much. If both Rat Ogre units had been on the flank, that combat is probably a lot closer, or I only win by 1 or 2 and probably don't outnumber him with the fear causers.
That was huge in the battle and it opened up that whole flank.
